Last week Microsoft had their big event showcasing the “next chapter” for the software company. The presentation was a little over two hours long but it was jam packed with new and surprising reveals including Windows 10, good news for gamers, Cortana, project Spartan, surface hub and the Hololens.
Windows 10, the operating system update that is so radical it prompted Microsoft to skip straight from Windows 8, will be coming to users “later this year.” Even with the famous coming soon release date there is a silver lining, windows 10 will be free for users that have windows 8.1 or 7. Now no company just gives their products away for free without reason. The idea behind it is windows 10 will encourage developers with a large install base as well as being a door to their services like One Drive and Office 365. Although Windows 10 was revealed last year at this event the public was shown consumer focused features that show the company’s goal to increase productivity.
With Windows 10 Microsoft is integrating their devices when it comes to gaming. Their gaming console Xbox One will be able to stream to any PC or tablet in your house. So if your TV is in use or you’re in another room you can still play.
Cortana is Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s Siri. It’s a virtual personal assistant integrated into the operating system that allows users to ask her to do things, such as pull up a certain file, picture, program, etc. Cortana can even take notes on your habits and tailor your user experience. However seeing as you may not want this feature so it is possible to control her too only learn as much as you want her too.
Microsoft unveiled a new browser as well, called Project Spartan. They claim its the faster, sleeker browser was developed to work best on more modern websites. Project Spartan comes with some exciting features including the ability to draw notes anywhere on a window and quickly share it. For those of us who are not the closest friends with internet explorer the news of a new browser is welcome. However do not expect to see the new browser anytime soon, Microsoft said it will not launch with the first release of Windows 10.
The next thing microsoft announced is their new workplace collaboration product called, the “Microsoft Surface Hub.” This device takes on the demanding task of increasing workplace productivity. The Surface Hub is an 84in, 4K display all in one device is essentially a really expensive whiteboard that is also a computer.
However the biggest thing to come out of this event was the unveiling of the Hololens. Microsoft is saying, “The era of holographic computing is here.” Hololens is a set of 3D glasses that allow the user to see and interact with 3D holograms in their own environment using augmented reality. They showed off a video of it being used for skype, minecraft and 3D modeling programs. Although there is no release date they did say it would come out during Windows 10 life span.
Microsoft has certainly been busy doing some innovative work and making big promises. These applications are still a couple years away and there’s no guarantee that it will be a hit. Some other company might take the same basic idea and execute it better. The Tech industry is ever changing and Sparknet Technologies is dedicated to researching the best tech and web solutions for any project.
